On Cruise 97 I had a couple of 2x4's bolted to the stanchion posts amidships and strapped four extra fuel cans each side to them. That allowed me to carry an extra 40 galls of diesel.
After I got back I saw another boat on the dock that had stainless steel rails nicely bent to hold his fuels cans. They were mounted nicely with clamp at about the same place but it was bent out so it allowed the can to sit on top of the toe rail and half off the boat. This allowed for the deck slosh to pass uninhibited under the cans. By sitting on the tow rail it also sits half off the boat give more room to walk on the deck.
